SoundWaters Research Intensive
SoundWaters Research Intensive (SRI) engages 10 high school students for each of three two-week sessions in July and August. This intensive summer program is geared towards local high school students interested in pursuing their passion for science, the environment and Long Island Sound. Students are selected based on interest, dedication to the environment and capability.
Students will graduate from the program with an understanding and application of design thinking in the context of solving systemic issues. They will gain experience with the scientific approach through data collection and analysis, see firsthand the local implications of global trends and learn best practices to communicate science to the community.
Field Work
Through effective teamwork and communication, students will have the opportunity to perform hands-on field data collection along the shore of the Long Island Sound, aboard the SoundWaters research vessel as well as aboard the 80’ Schooner SoundWaters. Data collected by the students will contribute to a cumulative data set that provides critical annual monitoring of and meaningful insight into the health of the Long Island Sound. Students will be challenged to analyze data collected and think critically to notice trends and draw conclusions.
Mentorship
Students will learn not only from their peers but also by working with college-aged staff mentors. These staff will provide students with insight into the college experience and guide students through their summer research. Presentations by professionals in the scientific community will also allow students to gain knowledge of potential future careers in the sciences. Networking with these professionals and staff will provide students with the support they will need in the future.
Communication Skills
Experience with presentations and materials preparation will also build self-confidence and ready students for their future in the scientific community. Students will learn the most efficient and effective way to communicate their data and results to the nonscientific community.
SoundWaters Research Intensive operates out of the SoundWaters Harbor Center in Boccuzzi Park.
