SoundWaters Research Intensive
SoundWaters Research Intensive (SRI) is a year-round program for high school students who are interested in pursuing a science major in college and/or a career in science. SRI has a focus on marine and climate science and offers students the opportunity to engage in rigorous field study, data collection, lab work, research, and analysis on, in and near Long Island Sound. The work they do contributes to a growing data set and long-term research about the Sound.
During the summer each SRI student will attend one two-week session at the Cohen SoundWaters Harbor Center when they will learn from marine scientists and participate in field study, data collection and analysis, and lab work. During the academic year students will meet at SoundWaters after school at least twice weekly to continue their studies, spending one afternoon on the SoundWaters Research Vessel and the other in the lab.
SRI students will conduct field study and research projects that include activities such as water sampling and analysis, population studies examining existing density and movement, and measuring thresholds and capacities of species relative to various environmental factors. Throughout the experience SRI participants will be challenged to be rigorous in their use of scientific method – identifying the problem, establishing hypotheses, determining appropriate methods to test the hypothesis, analyzing results and drawing conclusions. To do their work students will have access to professional research equipment and materials.
