A Visit to SoundWaters by Sixth Graders from Rippowam Middle School
Sixth grade students from Rippowam Middle School began their wastershed adventure with SoundWaters this week. They were in the water, on the water, testing the water, and learning about the animals in the water. Below is a short excerpt written by Rippowam students regarding their time here at SoundWaters.
“We are sixth graders from Rippowam Middle School. We went on a field trip to SoundWaters where we touched animals such as the spider crab.We learned it can have a fuzzy back with algae! This helps the spider crabs to camouflage in their habitat. We also went fishing with seine nets where we had to put on waders. We thought it would be really weird but when we went seining it was fun! We caught some leaves, pipefish, mud snails, minnows and different types of shells. One of our final activities was testing the waters of Long Island Sound. Not many people know this, but Long Island Sound has brackish water! Brackish water is a mix of salt and fresh water. Overall it was a really great day!”
