Hatchlings are adjusting well.
The hatchlings are acclimating well to life at the Coastal Education Center; they are strong swimmers and have healthy appetites.
With this rescue, SoundWaters has reaffirmed its role as a regional expert and resource and provided a permanent home to the terrapins. We’ve also significantly increased the number of animals that will be available to provide hands-on science education to the tens of thousands of students we serve each year. Diamondback terrapins are especially instructive to understanding concepts, themes and the science associated with the study of Long Island Sound. Scientific concepts such as adaption and habitats are fundamental for students to master and terrapins help them learn these in a fun way.
