Welcome to the 2024/25 kelp-growing season. We have been farming kelp at SoundWaters since 2019. Why? First, kelp is great for the health of Long Island Sound. Second, kelp is a potential healthy, organic food source and third, kelp is a tremendous tool for teaching students and the community about powerful science concepts, like bioextraction.
We laid out and seeded the farm in mid-November and will harvest the crop and remove the farm by mid-May. Along the way, we will tend to the farm weekly and post updates and progress reports here so you can virtually live the life of a kelp farmer on Long Island Sound. If you would like the updates to come directly to you, you can subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on social media.
If you have kelp-related questions, you can send them to us at kelp@soundwaters.org.
SoundWaters kelp farm is made possible in part by 11th Hour Racing, the Bank of America Foundation and Stella Mar Oysters.
