Rare Leatherback rescued in Sound
Leatherback turtles are the largest of all sea turtles, capable of reaching over six-feet in length and over 1,000 pounds. These huge creatures have a range that spans across almost every ocean worldwide—including the waters of Long Island Sound, where a Leatherback was entangled in a lobster buoy near Orient Point earlier this month. This species is listed as “vulnerable” under the Endangered Species Act, so its safety was critical for the officers who untangled it.
The Department of Environmental Conservation spotted the turtle while on patrol and swiftly grabbed ahold of the lines constricting the animal, quickly releasing it. This was the second Leatherback to become caught in buoys—last summer the same event occurred in Suffolk County. Thankfully, the officers around Long Island Sound keep sharp eyes for any creature in danger—and lend a helping hand to all species, especially our large vulnerable visitors. All rescuers were rightfully commended for their efforts in saving the turtles, and they hope to see more rare creatures swim safely throughout the Sound in the future.
