Holy Tide!!!

December 5, 2017/in Blog

Here along the coast of Long Island Sound, we are used to tides.  A tide happens when the ocean “pulls” back and forth due to the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun.

Every so often, the tide goes a little extreme.  A King tide is a non-scientific term to describe the highest tides.  This week at Cove Island Park, the highest tide was 9.4 ft at 12:00pm today, Tuesday.  The rest of this month, the tide will range from 6.6 to 8.6 feet.

Usually higher than normal tides are during a full moon, new moon, or when the sun, earth, and moon are aligned at perigee (moon closest to earth) and perihelion (earth closest to sun).
