The Diamondback Terrapins Have Arrived!
So happy to share the great news that the Terrapins flew in from Anchorage this afternoon and are now happily moved in to the SoundWaters lab. Upon arrival, the terrapins were measured, weighed, given fresh water and food (bloodworms) and placed in the hatchling nursery for supervision. Considering their traumatic journey, the terrapins appear healthy and active.
Some facts and figures about these confiscated terrapins:
1. 210 turtles (total) were confiscated
2. Turtles are being shipped to the states of: Florida, Illinois, Connecticut, S. Carolina, N. Carolina, Maryland, Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, New York, Alaska.
3. Specifically for Diamondback terrapins:
a. 126 DBT were confiscated
b. 10 institutions are receiving DBT as of today. States of: N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Texas, Maryland, Connecticut, Alaska.
4. The Terrapins traveled from Alaska in a cardboard box lined with Styrofoam. The turtles are placed into plastic deli cups with a damp paper towel. Newspaper is stuffed around the cups so they don’t move around during transit.
