East bound and down
The Crew and Captain of the schooner SoundWaters are enjoying the start of the “Schooner East 2014 Tour” with a nice sail to Port Jefferson NY. If you are on Long Island this week come on down for a sail out of the historic village of Port Jefferson. Sail information can be found here.
Population study of animals that live in the shallow water
STEM Academy students wore waders and life jackets and fished for animals in the intertidal zone as part of their population study. Everyone worked together to maneuver a 10′ seine net and dip nets. The students collected, counted and identified 3 species of fish, shrimp, hermit crabs and a horseshoe crab! Great job everyone!

SoundWaters STEM Academy students sail aboard the schooner SoundWaters
Aboard the schooner, students set the sails, performed a plankton population study, identified benthic animal adaptations, measured wind speed & direction, conducted groundwater filtration trials and hauled in the trawl net. Great trawl today
The campers from Cold Spring Harbor Boat club had a great trawl today. Not only did they pull up this ginormous fluke, they also pulled up 5 horseshoe crabs, 4 mantis shrimp, 3 large scups, 2 sea robins, and 3 window pane flounder.

SoundWaters STEM Academy Hydroponics Experiment!
SoundWaters STEM Academy participants began their hydroponics experiment today! Students discussed alternative ways to grow plants and food, measured soil levels, chose seeds and began their plant journal. Check back to see the growth!
