Science Rocks
A few of our past campers have returned to SoundWaters for the fall science and sailing program! This Thursday after school, they and their fellow students from Cloonan Middle School conducted a population study of the rocky shore. They found mostly Asian Shore Crabs, an invasive species introduced through ballast water on boats coming from East Asia. These crabs displace native species, take over food sources, and don’t have many predators. On the bright side, the students found a few native Chocolate-fingered Mud Crabs as well! They had a blast flipping over rocks and catching crabs, and learning more about the ecosystem of the Long Island Sound!
