The students of Sousa elementary school picked up a seastar encrusted fishing pole in the trawl net this afternoon. HONEST.in
The 4th graders from Manorhaven Elementary school are navigating their way through Manhasset Bay this afternoon. Their estimated position from several lines of sight was with in 1/8th of a nautical mile from the GPS position.
The students of Thomas Edison Elementary school from Port Chester, NY caught the first Blue Crab of the season in this afternoons trawl.
The crew of the schooner SoundWaters picked up a foam “gator” head out of Long Island Sound on this mornings sail with Parkway Elementary school. According to the Sea Grant and NOAA a hard foam object like that could float around for up to 50 years!
The schooner SoundWaters hauled in a 1 meter clear nosed skate in this mornings trawl with Jefferson Science Magnet School.
The schooner SoundWaters turns 30 today! After 5 years sunset sails in Florida the schooner Eagle sailed north and was re-christened “SoundWaters” It’s amazing to think how many thousands of students have learned about Long Island Sound aboard the deck of the 80′ schooner in the last 25 years. #tbt
“Softly softly, catchee monkey” -Jan Adkins. The crew of the SoundWaters helped remove the mizzen mast today to prepare for the schooner to go in the water tomorrow. As, Jan Adkins say: “Lift and move in small, orderly, safe stages.”
The crew brought various ships systems online: Main Engine: Check. Generator: Check. Fresh Water: Check. Sacrificial Anodes: Check. What are sacrificial annodes? They are pieces of zinc, a less noble metal, that will disolve instead of the steel or bronze when dissimilar metals are placed in brackish water.
The 2016 schooner SoundWaters crew arrived on Monday and have been busy getting the schooner ready for the upcoming season. Welcome new Educator / Deckhands Austin, David, Deborah and Taylor. Stay tuned for more from each of them as we get ready for the season.
